I started my vacation by heading straight into the studio to throw a wear board of beer mugs. I had 16 half-pound balls of clay already kneaded up and ready to go. Since I have a fast turnaround on these—about four days total—I decided not to trim them. I need to get them dried, handled, and finished quickly for an upcoming hometown show, so this batch has to move fast.
I used my throwing gauge to keep the size consistent and aimed for a form that’s narrow but still wide enough inside to clean easily. I try to make these mugs hold around two beers, somewhere between 32 and 40 ounces. I also like to keep them a bit thicker, since back in the day folks used to tap them on the table during drinking songs. I know I’m supposed to be relaxing during vacation, but getting a board of pots done makes me feel grounded. I just have to be careful not to let the whole break turn into a production sprint.
