Keeping Everything Up
Juggling tasks one at a time.
Yesterday I missed writing because I was working on changing my password for my Facebook account. After it signed me out of everything, it required a code that I had no idea how to get. It was a huge time-waster and a bit annoying. It also made me feel like an old guy. Since I had the day off, I decided to stop at the bookstore and write some while on my way back from visiting my brother, who was recovering in therapy after foot surgery.
I took Mom’s guitar and played for him and his roommate a little. It was quite a long trip, and so stopping for a little break to write was quite nice. Tonight I need to create more mugs, and tomorrow I start bowls, and I hope to throw the larger pots in the evening. I was thinking I might also do some slab soap dishes.
At times, it can be a challenge to do things at all the right time. Many times, I might do them in the wrong order, though I can never do two things at once. Multitasking makes me tired and quite miserable. So today I will need to take some time off between doing things with my family and also making pots later. I find it somewhat hard to make the transition. So when I get home I might need a nap.
Doing other things besides work and the pots is very refreshing at times, and even getting out and visiting others causes me to feel ready to work in the clay. I have some big hopes for the spring show and need to run some tests of new ideas and see which ones might work. In a perfect world, I would make bonsai tree dishes and also larger mixing bowls and then a few plates. I need to get the plate firings down so they can fire out looking somewhat like a set. Firing in the updraft kilns can be a challenge to have things come out somewhat uniform.
I would never give up the updraft kilns, however. Firing them is so enjoyable, and also manipulating the firings seems to be so easy to do with them, as they have peep holes and also an exhaust hole in the top. I’m sure at some point I would love to stuff burnables up into the bottom ports to create some type of effect on the pots. Those tests will be later, though. Right now, I need to work out things for the spring show.
If I were living yesterday a second time: I would have written my post in the morning before dealing with Facebook password nonsense. Technology problems always take three times longer than you think they will.
Things I am grateful for: The updraft kilns that fire inconsistently, which keeps things interesting.
Days remaining if I live to 86: 12,770
What technology problem are you letting steal time from the work that actually matters?
